Study Room Policy

Gitenstein Library’s study rooms fall into 2 categories:

The following rules apply to all study rooms:

  • Study rooms are intended for individual and collaborative academic work in the library and may not be used for regularly scheduled seminars, classes, club meetings, or other extra-curricular activities. Extra-curricular activities include but are not limited to fundraisers, sales of any sort, or event signups.
  • Library conduct applies to the study rooms as it does for the rest of the building.
  • Food and Drink Limitations: This policy explicitly limits the consumption of all non-snack items and all drinks that do not have secured lids, whether sold by the Library Café or not, to the Café.
  • Study rooms should be left clean; trash should be thrown away in trash cans.
  • Belongings should not be left unattended in the study rooms. The library is not responsible for loss, theft, or damage of personal property.
  • Chairs and tables may be rearranged within any study room but should be left neatly arranged upon departure. Furniture should not be moved in or out of study rooms.
  • Library materials should be left near the copiers or returned to the Access Services desk on the first floor. Library staff will reshelve the materials.
  • Appropriate use of the study rooms is on the honor system.

Rules for study rooms on the 2nd and 4th floors:

  • These study rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and may not be reserved or “held” by one person.
  • Use is restricted to students, faculty, and staff of The College of New Jersey.
  • Study rooms should not be used by any single group for more than three hours.
  • Groups of two or more will have preference in the use of these study rooms. Single users may be asked to move from rooms on the 2nd or 4th floors.
  • Graduate students will have preference for the use of the graduate study room (Rm. 413).
  • Groups of more than six will have preference for the use of the large study room (Rm. 220).

Rules for study rooms on the 3rd floor [reservation system pilot]:

  • Use is restricted to students of The College of New Jersey.
  • Individuals or small groups may make reservations.
