Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Databases

Academic Search Premier (EBSCOhost)

Provides citations and abstracts to over 4,000 journals covering most academic areas of study including biological sciences, economics, communications, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts and literature, medical sciences, and women’s studies. Approximately two-thirds of the articles are available as full text. Also contains images which can be accessed by clicking on the “image collections” icon.

African Women’s Bibliographic Database

Indexes books and government documents; articles appearing in edited books; periodical and journal articles; Masters theses and Ph.D. dissertations as well as a few B.A. theses and honors papers; conference papers; and videocassettes. The database is the outgrowth of a three volume work published in 1989 by Greenwood Press that indexed materials on African Women published during the International Women’s Decade, 1975-1985. In 1999 the database added hyperlinked documents from the Internet. The database indexes everything the compiler can find published in English about African women.

America: History and Life

Abstracts of articles on the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. Covers over 2,000 journals published worldwide, including state and local history journals and selected journals in the social sciences and humanities. In addition to articles, includes approximately 6,000 citations of book and media reviews from a selection of over one hundred key journals in US and Canadian history and related fields each year. The database also includes citations to abstracts of dissertations published in these areas. Each entry in the database is assigned appropriate indexing terms based on standard authorities. Every year approximately 16,000 new entries are added to the America: History and Life database.

Historical Abstracts

Abstracts of articles on the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada, which are covered in America: History and Life). Covers over 2,000 journals published worldwide. In addition to articles, each year Historical Abstracts includes approximately 3,000 citations to useful historical books as reviewed by the most prestigious journals in the field and citations to abstracts of dissertations of particular interest for historical research. Each entry in the database is assigned appropriate indexing terms based on standard authorities. Every year over 20,000 new citations are added to the Historical Abstracts database.

North American Women’s Letters and Diaries

Primary source material about personal and historical events written by women who lived in North America from 1675 to 1950. Materials include letters and diaries previously published in other sources as well as materials from unpublished manuscript sources. The collection includes approximately 150,000 pages of letters  including 7,000 pages of previously unpublished manuscripts, from more than 1,000 sources, including journal articles, pamphlets, newsletters, monographs, and conference proceedings, Represented are all age groups and life stages, a wide range of ethnicities, many geographical regions, the famous, and the not-so-famous. More than 1,500 biographies enhance the use of the database.

Women and Social Movements in the United States 1600-2000

This database in American women’s history includes more than 70 document projects, each of which poses a topic and provides a collection of documents, images and links to websites to address the topic.  About 5000 pages are added annually to the present database of nearly 30,000 pages of primary and secondary documents. Nearly 600 publications from the Women’s Commission Reports are also being added. Other features are a chronology of U.S. women’s history and a dictionary of social movements and organizations.

Oxford Encyclopedia of Women in World History

This multi-volume encyclopedia features more than 650 biographies of individuals and over 600 topical essays on culture, society, geography, history, movements, trends, gender studies, and so forth from prehistory to the present.  End notes for articles, a detailed chronology, a topical outline, and more than 400 illustrations supplement this resource.
